JOB SUMMARY:


Under general supervision of an assigned supervisor, perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or District facility; maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition during assigned shift; operate a variety of cleaning equipment used to perform job responsibilities. To accomplish these tasks the Custodian must work closely with the staff and administration of USD 506.

12 months or 2080 hours 

8.0 hours per day or duty days/hours as assigned

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policy(ies) and procedures.
  2. Cleans areas as assigned (i.e. rooms, halls, offices, restrooms, cafeteria, etc.). Vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, mops and buffs all types of floor surfaces.
  3. Washes windows, whiteboards, walls, doors and baseboards.
  4. Cleans and polishes furniture, windows, and metalwork.
  5. Washes, folds, and stores towels and uniforms.
  6. Maintains indoor lighting; changes lamps as necessary.
  7. Adjusts clocks as necessary.
  8. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets, and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper, and other items; wash mirrors, tile, walls, and windows; unclog drains and toilets; polish metal work daily.
  9. Washes, scrubs and disinfects restrooms and locker rooms as well as cleans sinks, fixtures, panels and drinking fountains daily.
  10. Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand, and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment as assigned; operate a variety of cleaning equipment utilized in custodial work, including industrial floor scrubber, stripper, polisher, and large wet mops.
  11. Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in a safe and appropriate manner using personal protective equipment (PPE). 
  12. Picks up trash and responds to special requests for custodial services from staff members.
  13. Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up paper, trash, and debris on grounds areas, parking lots, playgrounds, athletic fields, and other assigned areas.
  14. Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms, gymnasiums, and other facilities for special events or meetings as assigned; set up and assemble chairs, tables, and other furniture and equipment; clean up furniture, equipment, and debris following these events and other District needs as assigned.
  15. Unlocks doors and windows, turns on lights and prepares buildings for start of the day and/or locks doors and windows, turns off lights and secures buildings as assigned to maintain building security.
  16. Empties and cleans waste containers.
  17. Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during recess periods.
  18. Reports repair and maintenance needs to supervisor.
  19. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  20. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  21. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.  
  22. Attends work regularly and is punctual.
  23. Occasionally performs work beyond a standard 40-hour workweek when pre-authorized.
  24. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

 

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marginal duties of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Assists in maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment by reporting to lead worker or supervisor.
  2. Assists maintenance and groundskeeping departments as necessary (i.e. snow removal, painting).
  3. Attends staff meetings.
  4. Attends in-service training.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). 
  2. Submission of professional application materials.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previous experience working in janitorial or custodial positions.
  2. General knowledge of computer usage.

  5. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  
  6. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.  
  7. General knowledge of computer usage.
  8. Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, and members of the community. 
  9. Certificates as determined by the District including a valid Kansas Driver license and ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card.
  10. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after an employment offer is made).
  11. Ability to work independently without supervision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms (overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally); stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climbing of ladders. The position requires considerable physical effort and is more than 70% of the job functions. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance and smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, demonstrate strength and dexterity to operate cleaning tools. 



WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high.  The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.  The employee is regularly exposed to a variety of cleaning agents and some hazardous chemicals. 

 

The work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, and unpleasant odors. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. 

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties.
