JOB SUMMARY:


Under general supervision of an assigned supervisor, perform routine food preparation activities at an assigned school site or District facility. The Assistant Cook assists with food preparation and serving, and may supervise kitchen operations in the absence of the Head Cook.  To accomplish these tasks, the Assistant Cook must work closely with the staff and administration of USD 506. 

 

Payment Rate:  As established by the Board of Education

 

Shift/Hours:  

9 months or Assigned Calendar Hours

Hours per day or duty days/hours as assigned by administration

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policy(ies) and procedures.
  2. Assist in preparing and serving food.
  3. Assist the Head Cook in kitchen operations.
  4. Assist in directing the activities of other employees.
  5. Assist in cleaning kitchen equipment.
  6. Maintain proper sanitary safety practices and standards.
  7. Keep abreast of new information, regulations, innovative ideas and techniques.
  8. Attend professional meetings as approved by the Administration.
  9. Adhere to all district health and safety policies including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  10. Supervise kitchen operations in the absence of the Head Cook.
  11. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
  12. Communicate effectively with members of the school district and community.
  13. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  14. Appropriately operate all equipment as required.
  15. Support the value of an education.
  16. Support the philosophy and mission of USD 506.
  17. Other duties as assigned by the Head Cook or Administrative Staff.
  18. Cleans and disinfects areas as assigned.

 

  1. Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in a safe and appropriate manner using personal protective equipment (PPE). 
  2. Picks up trash and responds to special requests from staff members.
  3. Unlocks doors and windows, turns on lights and prepares buildings for start of the day and/or locks doors and windows, turns off lights and secures buildings as assigned to maintain building security.
  4. Empties and cleans waste containers.
  5. Reports repair and maintenance needs to supervisor.
  6. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  7. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  8. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.  
  9. Attends work regularly and is punctual.
  10. Occasionally performs work beyond a standard 40-hour workweek when pre-authorized.
  11. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

 

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marginal duties of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Assists in maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment by reporting to lead worker or supervisor.
  2. Attends staff meetings.
  3. Attends in-service training.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). 
  2. Submission of professional application materials.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previous experience working in kitchen or food prep positions.
  2. General knowledge of computer usage.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Previous experience working in kitchen or food prep positions preferred.  
  2. Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Able to professionally represent the district to staff, students, parents, and the community. Ability to interact with students and staff appropriately.
  3. Able to positively respond to supervisorial guidance and direction. Is able to be flexible according to department and building needs.  
  4. Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  5. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  
  6. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.  
  7. General knowledge of computer usage.
  8. Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, and members of the community. 
  9. Certificates as determined by the District which may include a valid Kansas Driver license and ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card.
  10. Must be able to attend a minimum of 6 hours of staff training annually
  11. Must have a current Food Safety Basic Certification, or be willing to attend training within 6 months of hiring date (this training will also count towards the 6 hours of staff training)
  12. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after an employment offer is made).
  13. Ability to work independently without supervision.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms (overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally); stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climbing of ladders. The position requires considerable physical effort and is more than 70% of the job functions. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance and smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, demonstrate strength and dexterity to operate cleaning tools. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high.  The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.  The employee is regularly exposed to a variety of cleaning agents and some hazardous chemicals. 

 

The work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, and unpleasant odors. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. 


While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties.
